Cultural influences, attitudes, and behavior vary within and across nations and within and across ethnicities. They are strongly embedded within communities and influence the business etiquette in Germany. In many respects, Germans are the masters of planning. This is a culture that likes forward-thinking and knowing what they are doing at a specific time on a specific day. The German thought process is extremely detailed, with each aspect of a project being examined in great detail. Most aspects of German living and working are defined and regulated by structure. For example, through laws, rules, and procedures, which are evident in all economic, political and even social spheres. Rules and regulations allow people to know what is expected so that they can plan their lives accordingly. Germans believe that maintaining clear lines of distinction between people, places, and things is the surest way to lead a structured and ordered life.
Dating in Germany – Dating a German Guy
In my 20s I would have considered dating a German guy boring. In my 30s it became sexy. If he likes you, he may even call the next day. Germans have rules for almost everything. This has happened to dozens of friends of mine in Munich.

On the one hand, there will always be this colleague who insists on opening a window when it’s Celsius outside because they need some fresh air, but on the other hand, once this air starts moving, it becomes the source of all evil. This draft is apparently highly dangerous to humans, as it can lead to a stiff neck, a mild cold or even pneumonia. I have yet to clearly identify the exact point in which a breeze of much-needed fresh air turns into a life-threatening danger, but luckily, I have a whole winter ahead of me to find out.
For a country known for its meticulous recycling culture, I am struck by Germany’s extensive use of unnecessary paper. Despite these concerning figures, if something is not written on paper it simply isn’t valid here, so prepare to write a letter if you want to terminate any contract, make sure to print receipts you receive via email and generally forget about PDFs. Keeping a hard copy of practically everything is very important. Germans don’t necessarily consider their colleagues their best friends, which came as quite a shock for me at the beginning.
My bosses here never asked me anything about my personal life, and I practically had to manipulate the conversation for them to know a bit more about me than just my name and where I was born. Since my colleagues are those I spend most of my time with, for us not to be close in some form or another creates a cognitive dissonance I can’t settle.
Searching for Your German Ancestors
The incursions of modern patterns of life and global forms of entertainment, from fast food to Hollywood films, have weakened the traditional arts, entertainments, and customs of regional and rural Germany, although this has occurred somewhat less so in southern Germany, where the older arts and usages have persisted concurrently with a gradual adaptation to a modern urban pattern of life; the old and the new coexist in an incongruous compatibility.
In late summer in the Alpine regions, colourful and festive parades still celebrate the successful return of cattle from mountain pastures to lowland farms. The wood-carvers, violin makers, and gunsmiths of Upper Bavaria continue, under great economic pressure, to follow their trades, not because doing so is quaint but because they still believe in the work itself. Similarly, some women in the Black Forest still wear an elaborate costume known as a Tracht on festival days because they have always done so rather than to amaze tourists.
Bonus: Dating a German! Although hardly a “custom,” the phenomenon called German (cis) men is still a great mystery for (cis) women residing in.
It is rather when you meet with others of the same interest group and you come closer. Special events are good. You have to have a good answer when you are asked where did you meet first. We met first, at the Oktoberfest. We met first at the FavBand concert. We met first at Spanish course in the Volkshochschule.
We met first at a carnival. We met first at the motorcycle parts shop. German men have a reputation for being insensitive, self-serving and cold. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. By contrast, some German men are surprisingly sensitive, almost to the point of being insecure and unsure of themselves. There is a tendency among German men to date women who are much younger than they are.
This more for the fun of dating and socialising rather for long-term or serious relationships. Usually, German men do not plan to wed or have any sexual relations with these younger women.
I am meeting someone for the first time and I want to make a good impression. What would be good discussion topics? Generally speaking, the communication patterns in Germany are not much different from those in Canada. Maybe people need a little bit longer to warm up. To make friends will take longer as it would in Canada.

Contrary to the expectations raised by the name, the festival does not begin in October: due to the milder weather conditions, this folk festival has been starting in September since Every year, around 6 million people descend on the Theresienwiese to celebrate, to enjoy the many fairground rides and, naturally, to tuck into the delicious snacks and outstanding beer. Italians, Japanese, Australians, Americans and others all want to share in the Bavarian joie de vivre. Even families with children will enjoy a visit to the Oktoberfest.
Every Tuesday is Family Day: the fair operators offer discounted prices. In addition, there are a further 21 smaller food tents. Despite having , seats, the tents are already closed before noon on the weekends due to overcrowding. Compared to other tents at the Oktoberfest, festivities at the Oiden Wiesn are far more traditional: here, the beer is served in earthenware tankards, the fairground rides are the old-fashioned kind and the bands in the Herzkasperl tent play traditional couples dances.
